Auto Battler Guide: Teamfight Tactics and the Genre Explained

Auto battlers are strategy games where you buy, position, and upgrade units on a board, then watch them fight automatically. Your decisions happen between rounds: which units to buy, where to place them, what items to equip. Combat resolves without input. The genre emerged from Dota Auto Chess and matured through Teamfight Tactics (TFT), which has become the dominant auto battler with a massive competitive scene.

How TFT Works

Eight players compete in a lobby. Each round, you buy champions from a shared randomized shop. Champions belong to traits (synergies activated when you field enough champions sharing the same trait). Fielding 3 Bruisers gives all Bruisers bonus health. Fielding 6 Bruisers gives even more. Building a team means assembling trait combinations that complement each other.

Champions upgrade when you combine three copies of the same champion into a 2-star version (doubled stats). Three 2-star copies combine into a 3-star version (tripled stats). Finding these copies before other players buy them is a key strategic element since the champion pool is shared.

Gold management follows a simple interest system: for every 10 gold saved (up to 50), you earn 1 bonus gold per round. This creates a tension between spending gold to strengthen your board immediately versus saving to earn interest for long-term advantage. The general rule: save to 50 gold, then spend only the interest.

Core Strategy Concepts

Strongest Board vs. Best Board: your strongest board is the best combination of units you currently own. Your best board is the ideal composition you are working toward. In the early game, play your strongest board to preserve health while accumulating gold. In the mid game, transition toward your best board as you find key units and items.

Scouting means checking opponent boards to inform your decisions. If three other players are building the same trait, the shared champion pool means your chances of finding 3-star upgrades drop significantly. Pivot to a less contested composition. If nobody is building your trait, your odds of hitting upgrades increase.

Item optimization determines your carry’s damage output. Each champion can equip three completed items made by combining component items dropped from PvE rounds. Certain item combinations create dominant carries: an attack speed item plus a lifesteal item on a melee carry creates a self-sustaining damage dealer. A spell power item plus a mana reduction item on a caster lets them cast abilities more frequently.

Positioning is your last lever before combat. Front line tanks absorb damage while backline carries deal it. Assassins jump to the enemy backline, so position your carry in the center-back rather than the corner if facing assassin compositions. Against area-of-effect abilities, spread your units rather than clumping them.

Stage-by-Stage Strategy

Stage 1 (PvE rounds): buy strong early units. Do not commit to a composition yet. Look at your item components and consider which carries they best support.

Stage 2-3 (Early PvP): level to 5 at round 2-5 and level to 6 at round 3-2 if you are winning. Play your strongest board. Identify your direction based on which 2-star units you hit and which items you have.

Stage 4 (Mid game): level to 7. This is the commitment point. Roll down to 30-40 gold to find your core composition’s key units. If you are healthy (above 50 HP), you can slow roll at 7 to hit 3-star lower-cost units. If you are low health, level to 8 and roll for higher-cost carries.

Stage 5+ (Late game): level to 8-9. Fill your board with the strongest available units. At this point, perfect positioning and item optimization matter more than unit upgrades.

Beyond TFT

Dota Underlords (discontinued but influential) introduced the Underlord system of global passive abilities. Super Auto Pets simplifies the genre into a casual format where you buy animals and arrange them in a line. Storybook Brawl (also discontinued) added spell cards to the auto battler framework.

The auto battler genre rewards pattern recognition, adaptive strategy, and resource management over mechanical execution. If you enjoy the strategic planning of card games but want spatial positioning to matter, auto battlers deliver.
